Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (or turkey for a lighter version)

1 small onion, finely diced

1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup ketchup

2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp brown sugar

1 tbsp mustard (yellow or Dijon, based on preference)

1 tsp smoked paprika

1/2 tsp black pepper

1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)

1 tbsp olive oil

4 hamburger buns (preferably brioche or whole wheat)

Optional: dill pickle slices for serving

Instructions

Cook the meat: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef (or turkey), breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks. Brown it for about 5-7 minutes until no longer pink. Drain any excess fat.

Sauté the veggies: Add the diced onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the pan with the meat. Cook for another 3-4 minutes until the veggies are softened.

Mix the sauce: In a medium bowl, combine the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, smoked paprika, black pepper, and salt. Stir until well blended.

Combine everything: Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet with the cooked meat and vegetables. Stir well to combine all ingredients. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

Toast the buns (optional): While the mixture simmers, you can toast the hamburger buns lightly on a grill or in a toaster for extra crunch.

Serve: Scoop a generous amount of the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottom half of each bun. Top with dill pickle slices if using, then place the top half of the bun over the filling. Serve immediately with your favorite sides!
