Ingredients

1 sheet of puff pastry (thawed if frozen)

4 oz cooked ham, thinly sliced

4 oz cheese (cheddar, Swiss, or your favorite), cut into strips

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)

1 tsp dried Italian herbs (oregano, basil, or thyme)

Salt and pepper to taste

Sesame seeds or poppy seeds for sprinkling (optional)

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry to smooth it out. Cut the pastry into long rectangles, approximately 3 inches wide and 5 inches long.

Add Filling: Place a slice of ham and a strip of cheese on one half of each pastry rectangle. If you're using Dijon mustard, spread a thin layer over the ham. Sprinkle with dried Italian herbs, and add a pinch of salt and pepper.

Fold and Twist: Fold the other half of the pastry over to cover the filling. Press down gently to seal the edges. Then, using a sharp knife, cut the filled pastry into strips, leaving one end intact. Twist each strip a few times to create a spiral shape.

Egg Wash: Transfer the twists to the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with the beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds if desired.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.

Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Serve warm as a snack or appetizer.
