Ingredients

1 lb ground pork sausage (Italian or breakfast sausage for flavor)

1 lb ground beef (80/20 for the best flavor and juiciness)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

Salt and black pepper to taste

4 slices of cheddar cheese

4 burger buns

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 cup shredded lettuce

1 medium tomato, sliced

1/2 red onion, thinly sliced

Pickles for topping

Ketchup and mustard for serving

Instructions

Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine the ground pork sausage, ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Gently mix to combine; be careful not to overwork the meat.

Shape the Patties: Divide the mixed meat into 4 equal portions (about 4 oz each). Form them into loose balls, with a slight indentation in the center to prevent puffing up while cooking.

Heat the Pan: In a large skillet or griddle, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat until shimmering.

Sear the Patties: Place the meatballs in the skillet. Using a spatula or a burger press, smash each ball down until it’s about 1/2 inch thick. This helps create a crispy edge. Cook without moving for about 3-4 minutes or until a deep crust forms.

Flip and Add Cheese: Flip the patties and cook for an additional 2 minutes. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty to melt.

Toast the Buns: While the cheese is melting, split the burger buns and toast them in the same skillet until golden brown.

Assemble the Burgers: Start with the bottom half of the toasted bun. Layer with shredded lettuce, a cheeseburger patty, tomato slices, red onion, pickles, and desired condiments. Top with the other half of the bun.

Serve: Enjoy your delicious Sausage Smash Burgers while they’re hot with a side of fries or your favorite chips!
