Ingredients

1 lb Italian sausage, casings removed

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced

1 yellow bell pepper, thinly sliced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Salt and pepper to taste

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 lb pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Olive oil, for cooking

Marinara sauce, for dipping (optional)

Instructions

Cook the Sausage: In a large skillet, heat a drizzle of olive oil over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.

Sauté the Vegetables: Add the sliced onion and bell peppers to the skillet. Cook for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. Stir in the minced garlic and Italian seasoning. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

Prepare the Dough: Spread a clean kitchen towel on your counter and dust it lightly with flour. Roll out the pizza dough into a rectangle, about 12x18 inches in size.

Assemble the Stromboli: Layer half of the mozzarella cheese over the rolled-out dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Spoon the sausage and pepper mixture over the cheese, then top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

Roll and Seal: Starting from one long side, carefully roll the dough away from you into a tight log. Pinch the seams to seal, and tuck the ends under to secure the filling.

Brush and Score: Transfer the Stromboli to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush the top with the beaten egg, and use a sharp knife to make several diagonal slashes on the top of the dough (this helps steam escape during baking).

Bake: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the Stromboli for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through. Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing.

Serve: Cut into slices and serve warm, ideally with marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
