Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 for moisture)

1/2 cup bread crumbs

1/4 cup onion, finely chopped

1 clove garlic, minced

1 large egg

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp Dijon mustard

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tbsp vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Gravy:

1 cup beef broth

1 cup sliced mushrooms (white or cremini)

1/4 cup onion, finely chopped

2 tbsp all-purpose flour

1 tbsp soy sauce

1 tsp Dijon mustard

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Prepare the Salisbury Steaks: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Shape Patties: Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval patties about 1/2 inch thick.

Cook the Patties: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and sliced mushrooms. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until softened.

Thicken the Gravy: Sprinkle flour over the mushroom mixture and stir, cooking for an additional 1-2 minutes. Gradually add the beef broth, soy sauce, and Dijon mustard, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Allow to simmer for 5-7 minutes until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper as needed.

Combine: Return the cooked Salisbury steaks to the skillet with the gravy, spooning the sauce over the patties. Simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Serve: Serve the Salisbury steaks with a generous helping of mushroom gravy over cooked egg noodles, mashed potatoes, or rice.
