Ingredients

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 tsp baking soda

½ tsp baking powder

½ tsp salt

½ cup vegetable oil

1 cup buttermilk (or substitute with milk + 1 tsp vinegar)

2 large eggs

2 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup hot water

Optional: ½ cup chocolate chips for extra fudginess

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In the same bowl, add the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix with a spatula or electric mixer on low speed until the mixture is smooth.

Incorporate Hot Water: Carefully stir in the hot water to the batter. The batter will be thin, but this is what makes the cake fudgy! If you’re adding chocolate chips, fold them in now.

Pour and Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it out evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter).

Cool and Serve: Let the cake cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely. You can serve it plain, dusted with powdered sugar, or topped with your favorite chocolate frosting.
