Ingredients

1 pound ziti pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 small onion, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage

1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes

1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce

2 teaspoons dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

Salt and pepper, to taste

15 ounces ricotta cheese

1 egg, beaten

3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the ziti pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

Add the ground beef or Italian sausage to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat.

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15 minutes to let the flavors meld together.

In a large bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, beaten egg, and half of the mozzarella cheese. Mix well until smooth.

In a large baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom. Layer half of the cooked ziti over the sauce, followed by half of the ricotta mixture. Spoon a layer of meat sauce over the ricotta, then repeat the layers with the remaining ziti, ricotta, and meat sauce.

Top the final layer with the remaining mozzarella cheese and the grated Parmesan cheese.

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Let the baked ziti cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.
