Funnel cakes have a rich history that dates back centuries. They are believed to have originated in the Middle Ages, with various cultures around the world preparing similar fried desserts. The name "funnel cake" is derived from the funnel-shaped tool used to pour the batter into hot oil, creating the iconic lace-like design that we associate with this sweet treat today. Traditionally, funnel cakes are served at fairs, carnivals, and festivals, where their warm, crispy texture and sugary topping make them a favorite among visitors.

Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup milk

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Oil for frying

Powdered sugar for dusting

Optional toppings: chocolate syrup, strawberry sauce, whipped cream, or sprinkles

Instructions

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

In another bowl, combine the milk, egg, and vanilla extract, then mix well.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. Avoid over-mixing; a few lumps are okay.

In a deep frying pan, heat about 2 inches of oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

Using a piping bag or a squeeze bottle, carefully drizzle the batter into the hot oil in spirals or small circles. Keep the pieces small (about 2 inches in diameter) to create bite-sized treats.

Fry until golden brown on both sides, approximately 1-2 minutes per side. You may need to cook them in batches.

Once they are golden, remove the funnel cake bites from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Dust the warm bites with powdered sugar and serve immediately. Add any optional toppings if desired, and enjoy!
