Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80% lean)

1 large onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

4 slices Swiss cheese

4 hamburger buns

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

Fresh thyme leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

In a large skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, sugar, salt, and pepper. Sauté for about 15-20 minutes until the onions are caramelized and golden brown, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and stir in Worcestershire sauce. Set aside.

Preheat your grill or stovetop skillet over medium-high heat. While it preheats, form the ground beef into four equal patties. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent doming while cooking.

Season both sides of the patties with salt and pepper. When the grill is ready, place the patties on it. Cook for 4-5 minutes per side for medium, or until your desired doneness is reached.

During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each burger patty and close the lid to melt the cheese.

Toast the hamburger buns on the grill or in a toaster until lightly brown.

Assemble the burgers: Place the burger patty with melted cheese on the bottom half of the bun, top with a generous scoop of the caramelized onions, and garnish with fresh thyme leaves if desired. Place the top half of the bun over the burger and press down gently.

Serve immediately with your favorite fries or a side salad.
