Ingredients

9 lasagna noodles

1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage

1 medium onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 cups ricotta cheese

1 egg

3 cups marinara sauce

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil leaves (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Noodles: Boil the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and lay them flat on a clean kitchen towel.

Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or Italian sausage. Cook until browned. Drain any excess fat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking until the onion is translucent. Stir in the marinara sauce, dried basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Let simmer for about 5 minutes.

Mix the Cheese Filling: In a bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, half of the grated Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, and a pinch of dried basil. Mix until smooth.

Assemble the Lasagna: In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce at the bottom. Place three lasagna noodles on top, then spread a layer of the ricotta mixture over the noodles. Add another layer of meat sauce and sprinkle with a layer of mozzarella cheese. Repeat the layers (noodles, ricotta, sauce, mozzarella) for a total of 3 layers, finishing with a layer of meat sauce on top.

Top it Off: Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses over the last meat sauce layer. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil to prevent sticking.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Let it Rest: Once done, take it out of the oven and let it rest for about 10-15 minutes before slicing. This will help the layers to set up nicely.

Garnish and Serve: Garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving. Cut into squares and enjoy your delicious homemade lasagna!
