Ingredients

1 loaf Cuban bread (or a good-quality Italian bread)

1/2 cup yellow mustard

1/2 pound roasted pork, sliced (lechon asado)

1/4 pound ham, thinly sliced

1/4 pound Swiss cheese, sliced

1/4 cup dill pickles, sliced (or bread and butter pickles if preferred)

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

1 tablespoon olive oil

Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste

Instructions

Prepare the Bread: Preheat your sandwich press or skillet over medium heat. Slice the Cuban bread into 2 halves lengthwise and smear yellow mustard generously on both inside surfaces.

Layer the Fillings: On the bottom half of the bread, layer the roasted pork slices evenly, followed by the ham, Swiss cheese, and pickle slices. Season lightly with freshly cracked black pepper. Place the top half of the bread over the fillings.

Butter and Oil It: Spread the softened butter on the outside of the top half of the sandwich, then drizzle olive oil on the skillet or sandwich press.

Cook the Sandwich: Place the sandwich in the heated skillet or press it down with a heavy pan or a flat metal spatula if using a skillet. Cook for about 4-5 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted.

Flip and Finish: Carefully flip the sandwich (if not using a press) and cook the other side for another 3-4 minutes. The goal is a toasted crust with melty cheese.

Slice and Serve: Once both sides are beautifully toasted, remove the sandwich from heat. Let it cool for a minute, then cut it into diagonal halves for easy eating. Serve with extra pickles on the side and enjoy!
