Ingredients

2 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced

1 cup heavy cream

1 cup whole milk

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese

1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

2 tablespoons fresh rosemary, finely chopped

2 tablespoons fresh thyme, finely chopped

Salt and black pepper to taste

2 tablespoons butter (for greasing)

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter.

Prepare the Cream Mixture: In a medium saucepan over low heat, combine the heavy cream, milk, minced garlic, rosemary, thyme, nutmeg (if using), salt, and black pepper. Heat until just warmed through; do not bring to a boil.

Layer the Potatoes: Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Pour half of the cream mixture over the potatoes, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle half of the Gruyère and half of the Parmesan cheese on top.

Repeat Layers: Add the remaining potato slices on top of the cheese layer, followed by the rest of the cream mixture. Finish by topping with the remaining Gruyère and Parmesan cheeses.

Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes. After 40 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-30 minutes until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.

Let it Rest: Once done, remove from the oven and let it rest for about 10 minutes before serving. This allows the gratin to set and makes it easier to slice.

Garnish and Serve: Garnish with additional fresh herbs if desired, slice into portions, and enjoy your creamy herb-infused potato gratin as the perfect comfort food!
