Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

4 slices of rye bread (or marble rye for a twist)

4 slices of Swiss cheese

2 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

Optional: 2 tablespoons Thousand Island dressing for extra flavor

Instructions

Prepare the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for about 10-15 minutes until the onions are caramelized and golden brown. Set aside.

Form the Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Divide into two equal parts and shape them into patties, slightly larger than the rye bread as they will shrink during cooking.

Cook the Patties: In the same skillet used for the onions, add a little more butter if needed, and sear the patties over medium-high heat for about 4-5 minutes on each side until they reach your desired doneness. Top each patty with a slice of Swiss cheese during the last minute of cooking to melt.

Assemble the Patty Melt: On the unbuttered side of the rye bread, spread a thin layer of Thousand Island dressing if using. Place a patty with melted cheese on top, followed by a generous portion of caramelized onions. Top with another slice of rye bread, buttered on the outer side.

Grill the Melt: Clean the skillet and heat over medium-low. Carefully place the assembled patty melt on the skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until the bread is golden brown and crispy and the cheese is fully melted.

Serve: Remove from heat and cut the melt in half to reveal the melty goodness inside. Serve hot, accompanied by pickles or your favorite potato chips.

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 40 minutes | Servings: 2 hearty melts
