Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 for flavor)

1 cup bread crumbs (plain or seasoned)

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 large egg

1/4 cup milk

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

1/2 tsp paprika

1/2 tsp dried parsley

1 cup beef broth (for the gravy)

2 tbsp butter

2 tbsp all-purpose flour

Instructions

Prep the Meat Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, paprika, and dried parsley. Use your hands to mix everything together until just combined. Do not overwork the mixture.

Form Patties: Shape the meat mixture into oval patties, about 1/2 inch thick. You should end up with 4 to 6 patties depending on the size.

Cook the Patties: In a large skillet, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add the patties to the skillet and cook for about 5–6 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and cooked to your desired doneness. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.

Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour to create a roux, cooking for about 1-2 minutes until it turns a light golden color. Gradually add the beef broth, whisking to prevent lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer until it thickens.

Combine Patties and Gravy: Return the cooked patties to the skillet, coating them in the gravy. Let them simmer in the gravy on low heat for about 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

Serve: Plate the patties with a generous spoonful of gravy on top. This dish pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes or rice and steamed vegetables.

              Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 35 minutes | Servings: 4-6

Enjoy your comforting and hearty Amish Poor Man's Steak!
